Swat, Kalam, Kumrat, Chitral & the Kalash Valleys

This is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at its most diverse — eight days moving from the pine forests of Swat to the alpine lakes of Kalam, through the rarely-visited wilderness of Kumrat Valley, and over the Lowari Pass into Chitral and the ancient Kalash Valleys, one of the last surviving pre-Islamic cultures in the region. Every night is spent in a 4 or 5-star property, every meal is included, and every transfer is private. Built for the traveler who wants the real frontier, delivered without compromise.

Arrive at Islamabad International Airport, where your private guide and driver welcome you for a seamless transfer to your 5-star city hotel. Rest, settle in, and enjoy a welcome dinner as your trip director briefs you on the mountain journey ahead. Overnight in Islamabad.

Drive north along the Swat Expressway into the "Switzerland of Pakistan." Arrive in Mingora and check into your 4-star hotel, then visit the Swat Museum and the ruins of Butkara Stupa, remnants of the valley's Buddhist past. In the afternoon, drive up to Marghazar to see the White Palace, the former summer residence of the Wali of Swat. Full board throughout. Overnight in Swat.

Third Domain Exclusive

A private walkthrough of the White Palace grounds with a local historian, arranged exclusively for Third Domain guests.

Continue north along the Swat River to Kalam, passing through Bahrain and the dense pine stands of the Ushu Forest. Check into your hotel, then take a 4x4 up to Mahodand Lake, a glacial-fed lake ringed by snow peaks at the head of the valley. Full board throughout. Overnight in Kalam.

A 4x4 transfer over the Kumrat road brings you into one of KPK's least-visited valleys — dense fir forests, the clear Panjkora River, and open meadows largely free of crowds. Spend the day walking riverside trails and visiting a local waterfall, with a riverside lunch served en route. Full board throughout. Overnight in Kumrat.

Drive west through Dir and the Lowari Tunnel, the lifeline that connects Chitral to the rest of Pakistan year-round. The road climbs through dramatic, arid terrain before descending into the Chitral Valley, with Tirich Mir — the highest peak of the Hindu Kush — visible ahead. Check into your hotel in Chitral town. Full board throughout. Overnight in Chitral.

Third Domain Exclusive

A reserved viewpoint stop at the Lowari Top, weather permitting, for an unobstructed view back over the Dir hills.

A full day exploring the Kalash Valleys, home to one of the last surviving pre-Islamic communities in the region, known for their distinct language, dress, and animist traditions. Visit Bumburet Valley's villages and the Kalasha Dur Museum, then continue to Rumbur for a quieter, more traditional valley experience. A locally hosted lunch is included. Full board throughout. Overnight in Chitral.

A gentler day in Chitral town. Visit the Shahi Qila (Chitral Fort) and the adjoining Shahi Mosque, then drive into Chitral Gol National Park, home to the markhor — Pakistan's national animal — against a backdrop of Tirich Mir. Browse Chitral's old bazaar for local wool shawls and embroidered caps before dinner. Full board throughout. Overnight in Chitral.

Third Domain Exclusive

A private sunset viewing point inside Chitral Gol National Park with a wildlife ranger, away from the standard park entrance.

A final morning at leisure in Chitral before transferring to Chitral Airport for your flight back to Islamabad (subject to weather clearance; a scenic Lowari road alternative is held in reserve). Your private transfer connects you onward to Islamabad International Airport in good time for your international departure, bringing your eight-day journey through Pakistan's frontier province to a close.

Before You Travel

Is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa safe for international tourists?

Yes. Swat, Kalam and Chitral are well-established tourist destinations with regular checkpoints and a long-standing local tourism industry. Third Domain Travel monitors conditions across every route we operate and adjusts plans where needed, including foreigner registration formalities in Chitral and the Kalash Valleys.

Do I need a visa to join this tour?

Most nationalities can apply for Pakistan's e-Visa online before travel. Once you confirm your booking, we issue an official tourism invitation letter to support your application and guide you through the process.

What is the best time to visit Swat, Kalam and Chitral?

May through October offers the clearest skies and full access through the Lowari Tunnel. May brings the Kalash Valleys' Joshi spring festival, while autumn (September–October) offers cooler weather and harvest-season festivities.

Can the itinerary be adjusted for my dates or interests?

Yes. This itinerary is the foundation of a private tour — departure dates, pacing, and add-on experiences (an extended Kalash Valleys stay, Malam Jabba, or a Naran-Kaghan extension) can all be tailored during booking.

How many people will be in my group?

This is a private departure, not a fixed-group tour. Your itinerary, vehicle, and guide are reserved exclusively for your party — whether that's a solo traveler, a couple, or a small family group.
